OpenAI has announced the removal of text chat limits for all users of ChatGPT, which recently surpassed 1 billion weekly users. This new experience will be powered by the updated GPT-5.6 Luna model, marking a significant development in OpenAI’s offerings.
The introduction of the GPT-5.6 Luna model is set to replace the previous version, GPT-5.5, as the default model for users on the Free and Go tiers. This change is a part of OpenAI’s ongoing effort to enhance user experience and facilitate deeper engagements in text-based communication.
In addition to the model upgrade, all users will now have access to a new “Think” button. This feature allows users to select higher reasoning power for tackling complex inquiries, thereby enabling more thoughtful and nuanced responses. Despite these enhancements, it’s important to note that there will still be distinct limits for features like file uploads, image generation, and voice inputs.
Plus and Pro users are also set to benefit significantly from this update. They will gain access to the upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model, which is optimized for quick tasks such as answering questions, conducting web research, providing advice, planning, and decision-making. This model is distinct from the versions of GPT-5.6 Sol that function with Codex and Work, which remain unchanged.
Moreover, Plus and Pro users will encounter a new thinking slider, allowing them to fine-tune the depth of thought that the model applies to their queries based on complexity. This feature empowers users to better control how comprehensive or concise they want the responses to be. Whether seeking a quick answer or a more elaborate explanation, this adjustment will cater to varied user needs.
OpenAI’s internal assessments show promising improvements in the accuracy of responses with the new models. Factual inaccuracies have decreased significantly—by 62% for the GPT-5.6 Luna model compared to its predecessor, GPT-5.5-Instant, and even more remarkably, by 68% for the GPT-5.6 Sol model. This enhancement in reliability showcases the advancements in natural language processing that OpenAI is achieving.
For users eagerly anticipating these updates, the upgraded version of GPT-5.6 Sol is available to Plus and Pro subscribers starting today. In contrast, Free and Go users can look forward to the new features arriving later this week, including unlimited text chatting and the much-anticipated Think button designed for more complex inquiries.
