Automatic Kernel Cleanup
One of the standout features of this new kernel management system is its automatic cleanup process. Linux Mint will now delete old kernels automatically once a week. Transition to System Administration Tool
In a shift that might take some getting used to, kernel management is moving out of the Update Manager and into the System Administration tool for both the standard and Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) versions. This new layout is designed to provide a more user-friendly interface and streamline how kernels are tracked.
Users will now be able to track kernels by series rather than individual versions. This means that instead of dealing with every version separately, you can manage related kernel versions under a common series umbrella. This simplifies the overall experience significantly, making it easier for users to stay on top of updates.
Customization Options
What makes this new system even more appealing is the level of customization offered. Users have control over which kernel series they want to track and can choose how many older kernels they wish to retain within that series. The system ensures that the active kernel—the one you’re currently using—is never deleted unexpectedly.
For those who prefer instant control over their systems, Mint has included a manual ‘Clean up’ button. This allows users to free up space immediately, providing a quick and straightforward way to manage disk usage.
Enhanced Tracking Capabilities

Moreover, if you install a kernel from another series, like OEM or Real Time, the tool will prompt you with options to track it. By tracking these, users benefit from automatic installations of related meta-packages and future updates, minimizing manual intervention.
Managing Custom Kernels
For users who enjoy experimenting with custom kernels—whether from a random PPA or a .deb package—there’s a method to ensure they don’t get wiped away in a cleanup. While these custom kernels can’t be tracked formally by the tool, you can still designate them as “tracked” to prevent their deletion. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that you are responsible for updating these kernels, and the tool will remind you of that.
Space Management Benefits
If you’re someone who does not pay much attention to updates, you might be amazed at how many kernels sit on your system side by side. Selecting the ‘Advanced options’ for your distro via the GRUB boot loader will reveal all installed kernels—including their respective recovery modes.
On one of my Linux Mint 22.3 installations, I found four different kernels available, along with their recovery modes. While some of these are beneficial, many are not strictly necessary, especially when you have several iterations of the same series.
Removing unused kernels can reclaim several hundred megabytes of space, making a noticeable difference, especially on systems with limited storage. However, it’s wise to keep at least one known backup kernel—just in case you need to revert for any unforeseen issues.
Future Updates
As for when these promising changes will roll out, it remains unclear whether existing users of Linux Mint 22.3 and LMDE will receive these updates as part of a software upgrade. There’s also speculation about whether the changes will debut with the upcoming Linux Mint 23 ‘Alpha,’ scheduled for release later this year.
