BMW’s Digital Innovations Unveiled at CES 2024

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – January 8, 2024: BMW showcased its commitment to the digital customer experience during CES 2024, unveiling a range of exciting technological advancements aimed at revolutionizing the future of mobility. From enhanced video streaming and in-car gaming to the integration of augmented reality and generative AI, the highlights reflect BMW’s leadership in digitized automotive technology.

    Expanding the ConnectedDrive Store

At the heart of BMW’s updates is the ConnectedDrive Store, which offers an ever-expanding array of apps for current BMW models equipped with Operating System 9. The store, available through the optional BMW Digital Premium package, now includes third-party applications in categories such as music, news, and gaming. BMW is set to introduce more games, allowing customers to enjoy a console-like experience on the go. One of the standout offerings, Beach Buggy Racing 2, allows for multiplayer racing using Bluetooth controllers, enhancing the driving experience in a fun, interactive way.

As part of the growing gaming ecosystem, the AirConsole app lets drivers and passengers engage in both single and multiplayer gaming. With the smartphone serving as a controller, these games are designed to be easily accessible, making the journey more entertaining.

    Cutting-Edge Video Streaming

Adding to the entertainment options, BMW has optimized the in-vehicle video streaming experience. Collaborating with XPERI, Inc., BMW has integrated the DTS AutoStage Video Service powered by TiVo into its infotainment systems. This allows for a rich variety of content, including live channels and on-demand media, directly accessible on the vehicle’s central display, making the drive as enjoyable as it is productive.

The platform, originally featured in the new BMW 5 Series, will be available across various luxury models. The video app includes hit streaming services and country-specific offers, ensuring that customers can enjoy tailored content wherever they are.

Augmented Reality in the Driving Experience

One of the most captivating innovations on display was the integration of augmented reality (AR) technology through XREAL Air 2 glasses. During the event, visitors experienced how AR can enhance navigation, hazard identification, and points of interest. This immersive technology aims to provide both drivers and passengers with seamless information, complementing the vehicle’s built-in displays.

BMW’s journey with AR began back in 2008 and has continually evolved through various research projects and partnerships. The goal is to standardize these technologies, bringing enhanced functionality to the digital driving experience.

Generative AI and the Intelligent Personal Assistant

Another forward-looking development is found in the enhancements to BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant. Through a collaboration with Amazon, the assistant is being powered by Large Language Models (LLMs), enabling more natural and conversational interactions. This means drivers can receive instant, accurate responses to inquiries about vehicle functions while controlling specific features hands-free.

The Intelligent Personal Assistant has long utilized AI for voice recognition, but these latest advancements significantly broaden its capabilities, enhancing the overall user experience.

    Remote-Controlled Valet Parking

A noteworthy project unveiled is BMW’s partnership with Valeo to develop remote-controlled valet parking capabilities. Demonstrating this technology at CES 2024, attendees were able to witness firsthand how a vehicle can autonomously maneuver to parking spaces. This is not only a glimpse into future Level 4 automated driving solutions but also highlights the practical applications of remote control in complex urban environments, like busy parking lots or airports.

This technology allows users to navigate their cars in challenging scenarios where traditional autonomous systems may struggle, combining cutting-edge technology with real-world usability.

BMW’s innovations at CES 2024 reaffirm the company’s commitment to enhancing the driving experience through entertainment, technology, and innovative digital solutions. With these developments, BMW is setting the stage for a future where mobility is not only about transportation but also about an enriched digital lifestyle on the move.
