Meraque Introduces Malaysia’s First Plantation AGV, Leading the Charge in Agricultural Robotics Automation

Innovations in Agriculture: Introducing Meraque’s RACE

Meraque Group, a pioneering Malaysian robotics solutions company, has recently unveiled a groundbreaking advancement in agricultural technology with the launch of the Robotic Agro in Complex Environment (RACE). This remarkable Autonomous Ground Vehicle (AGV) is the first of its kind in Malaysia, specifically engineered to tackle the complexities found in agricultural environments.

The Features that Set RACE Apart

RACE is equipped with a suite of sophisticated features designed to enhance both precision and efficiency in farming. At its core, it employs artificial intelligence (AI) for mobile control, allowing it to intelligently navigate intricate terrains. The vehicle boasts a long-range (LoRa) data transmission system, facilitating real-time communication, even in challenging settings.

One of RACE’s most impressive capabilities is its light detection and ranging (LiDAR) navigation, which ensures precision in maneuverability. Additionally, it comes with a substantial 500-litre smart liquid tank, offering a wide 12-metre spray width that enables efficient fertilizer application across large fields. It is also engineered to climb steep terrains, capable of navigating slopes with an impressive 30° climbing ability.

    Patented Innovations

Meraque has secured patents for several cutting-edge technologies incorporated within RACE. This includes real-time kinematic (RTK) LoRA technology, which enhances positional accuracy, and swarm technology, allowing multiple units to coordinate and function effectively in a group. Moreover, the smart spraying feature optimizes the application of fertilizers, reducing waste and increasing the efficiency of input resources.

    Redefining Labor Dynamics in Agriculture

The design and function of RACE align with Meraque’s commitment to reducing reliance on foreign labor while improving the consistency of fertilizer spraying in various agricultural sectors. Beyond oil palm plantations, RACE is adaptable across a range of crops, encompassing durians, rubber, coconuts, paddy fields, and pineapples. This versatility highlights while enabling technology to meet diverse agricultural demands.

    Autonomous Functionality

RACE is equipped with a high-power computing module, which acts as its “brain.” This innovative module allows it to navigate autonomously among plants, continuously assessing its surroundings to make intelligent decisions regarding routing. Furthermore, RACE utilizes high-precision location points to establish boundaries for its operational area.

In terms of operational capabilities, RACE offers 360° vertical and horizontal spray functions and advanced obstacle avoidance detection systems. These features contribute not only to its operational efficiency but also to enhanced safety during its agricultural tasks, all while accommodating a maximum load capacity of 700 kilograms.

    A Shift in Meraque’s Focus

The official launch of RACE signifies a pivotal transformation for Meraque. Once primarily focused on drone technology, Meraque is now carving out a niche in robotic automation tailored specifically for agriculture. This strategic pivot underscores the company’s ambition to modernize the agricultural landscape through innovative technology, positioning it as a key player in this evolving sector.

    Meraque’s Vision for the Future

Meraque’s aspirations extend beyond immediate technological advancements. The company aims to become one of the top 10 global agricultural technology (AgTech) robotic automation companies by 2025. This significant goal aligns with a broader vision of establishing Malaysia as a regional hub for robotics within the agriculture and manufacturing sectors by 2030.

To achieve this, Meraque has also committed to training and employing a growing workforce. So far, they have successfully onboarded over 250 employees, underscoring their dedication to fostering local talent in innovative technology.

    A Commitment to Sustainability

CEO Md Razalee Ismail emphasizes that the company’s journey is driven by a commitment to innovation and sustainability. The development of RACE aims not only to revolutionize the agricultural industry but also to elevate Malaysia’s position on the global agricultural stage.

He articulates a vision where technology significantly bolsters the agriculture sector, ultimately enhancing food security and driving efficiency and sustainability. With RACE, Meraque sets a bold precedent for the future of agriculture, embarking on a mission to leverage technology to empower agricultural endeavors.

    Malaysia’s Growing Robotics Landscape

As an integral part of Malaysia’s National Robotics Roadmap, the country is focusing on enhancing automation across various sectors, with agriculture identified as a priority industry. With expectations of a robust robotics market growth, projected to reach $273.61 million by 2027, Meraque’s initiatives align well with these evolving dynamics.

By continuously investing in research, development, and local expertise, Meraque aims to lead the charge in transforming agriculture through automation and technology, illustrating a promising path forward in the robotics landscape.
