Pedro Falé, a threat researcher with the security firm Bitsight, has uncovered a complex ad fraud network connected to a popular brand of streaming devices known as H96. By registering an expired domain once used for telemetry, Falé was able to observe a vast web of fraudulent activity. What initially seemed straightforward—collecting hardware data and installed apps from tens of thousands of H96 devices—quickly revealed a shocking truth: nearly all reporting devices were posing as mobile phones from various well-known manufacturers, including Samsung and Huawei.
“Upon inspecting the traffic, we noticed something was wildly wrong,” Falé noted. “Devices that were supposed to be Android TV boxes were reporting as phones.”
The Spooky Link to Fengwo Group
Diving deeper, Falé discovered that the devices had two apps installed from a company called Zhejiang Fengwo IoT Technology Ltd, founded in 2019 in China. The group operates under the banner of Fengwo Group and runs an ad-publishing portfolio that is intricately linked to this sprawling fraud network. This company has even registered several patents that align closely with the functions of these apps.
Bitsight’s extensive analysis traced the undertakings back to Fengwo Group’s operational framework. It turns out, these apps help organize the ad fraud network through H96 devices that act as traffic sources, artificially clicking on ads featured on sites constructed with AI-generated content.
The Role of AI-Generated Content
The fraudulent sites run by the Fengwo Group cover various topics, including finance, health, and entertainment, with the cunning design to display ads exclusively when accessed by devices that match the spoofed mobile profiles of the H96 boxes. According to Falé, this allows the scam to become credibly concealed under the guise of legitimate website traffic.
Curiously, the Fengwo Group promotes itself as redefining human-AI interaction. The firm boasts over 120,000 "AI digital humans," a sensational claim that might simply serve as a marketing tactic to misdirect suspicion from its nefarious operations.
Blockchain Play for Simplified Fraud
An intriguing aspect of the Fengwo Group’s capabilities is its use of Blockly, a visual programming language initially designed to educate children about coding. This user-friendly interface allows low-skill operators to create and deploy ad fraud routines without needing extensive technical know-how. Bitsight’s report highlights that this simplified tool significantly reduces operational costs while making it easier for less experienced users to engage in fraudulent activities.
A Dual Existence: Streaming & Fraud
Interestingly, the H96 devices function in a dual capacity. Bitsight found that these devices either relay residential proxy traffic or engage in ad fraud, but never do both simultaneously. When the TV is on, and the HDMI signal is detected, the box acts as a residential proxy. However, when the TV is turned off, it swiftly switches back to its ad fraud operations.
The FBI’s Warning and Consumer Risks
Despite repeated warnings from the FBI and industry experts about the threats posed by these streaming devices, major retailers like Amazon and Best Buy continue to market them aggressively. These devices, often embedded with unofficial versions of Android, are frequently promoted via influencers as an easy way to access streams without a subscription.
As it turns out, these off-brand devices commonly come with residential proxy software built-in, which allows them to rent users’ Internet connections to anonymous third parties, ranging from aggressive content scrapers to cybercriminals. This presents serious security vulnerabilities, leaving users exposed to additional risks as illustrated by Synthient’s documentation, which tracked botnets enslaving millions of such devices.
Revenue Estimates and the Bigger Picture
Estimates suggest that the ad fraud network linked to the Fengwo Group could generate revenue exceeding $50,000 daily, solely from ad engagements. This figure focuses only on one of its outdated domains. The real figure might be far more substantial, especially when factoring in income from residential proxy services.
The operation behind this faceless network cleverly shrouds its real motives by advertising extravagant claims, such as having a vast reservoir of "AI digital humans." However, caution is warranted, as such claims could be obscuring more dubious activities, historically seen with similar proxy services.
