Proception’s Unique Approach

This traditional approach involves a human operator using a VR headset to maneuver a robot, but it has its limitations. Teleoperators lack feedback from the objects being manipulated and are restricted by the number of available robots for training.
To counteract these limitations, Proception employs a sensor-laden glove that captures rich data on human hand interactions without necessitating a robot’s involvement. Testing is done with human participants wearing both the glove and a headset, allowing for comprehensive data gathering. This glove also plays a dual role, acting as the sensor-rich “skin” for Proception’s robotic hands, which incorporate 22 degrees of freedom and multiple joints per finger, enabling a wide array of movements.

Li believes that the synergy between advanced hardware and extensive data collection will allow Proception to leap ahead of competitors who primarily focus on just hardware or non-scalable data collection strategies. “You need both hardware and data, and those need to come hand-in-hand to get [dextrous manipulation] to work,” Li explains.
